Boris Bregvadze Has Passed Away

On Wednesday, 28 March choreographer, dance pedagogue and National Artist of the Russian Federation Boris Bregvadze succumbed to a long-term illness. The artist died in St. Petersburg at the age of 86. Boris Bregvadze was born on March 19, 1926 in Saratov, where he studied at a ballet school of the local Theatre of Opera and Ballet, and where he subsequently won his first engagement. From 1947 he began performing with the famous St. Petersburg–based ballet ensemble of Kirov (now Mariinsky) Theatre, most remarkable there were his portrayals of heroic characters such as Solor in La Bajadère, Basil in Don Quixote, Eugene in The Bronze Horseman and many more. From 1961 he taught at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet and three years later he founded at the Institute of Culture (now St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts) what was the first department of choreography in the former Soviet Union, where he taught until the very end of last year. "His influence on the cultural life of our city, the development of choreography in Russia and abroad is really priceless", says an official statement issued by the St. Petersburg governor’s office. Boris Bregvadze was a frequent guest to many world scenes as both a dance master and stage director, focusing mainly on the classical repertoire; at the National Theatre in Prague he participated in the staging of ballets Paquita (1974), Don Quixote (1986) and Sleeping Beauty (1990, 2000).
