ImPulsTanz Takes Vienna's Stages

On Thursday, July 12, 2012, the 29th ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival opened to present highlights of the international performance world as well as leading artists and newcomers of the Austrian dance scene within the scope of the Choreographic Platform Austria all the way through to August 12. Among the highlights of the first week are pieces such as Drumming Live by outstanding Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and her company Rosas: 14 dancers that grace the stage accompanied by the hypnotic drum composition of Steve Reich, interpreted live by 12 members of the Ictus ensemble. Also from Belgium, a renowned artist Jan Fabre comes to Vienna with a marathon event for theatre fans: After more than 25 years, he re-enacts his historical pieces The Power of Theatrical Madness and This is theatre like it was to be expected and foreseen – both productions are considered key works of recent theatre history. In the original cast of 1984, one could follow the young Wim Vandekeybus, who later on founded his own company Ultima Vez and has thrilled the dance audiences all over the world with his work ever since. In Vandekeybus' newest creation booty Looting, he connects dance to film and photography in his meanwhile signature manner – this piece will also be shown at ImPulsTanz in August. In the second ImPulsTanz week, the Choreographic Platform Austria CPA*2012 starts, featuring works by Liquid Loft/Chris Haring, Doris Uhlich, Anne Juren, Philipp Gehmacher along with emerging talents from Austria such as An Kaler or The Loose Collective. One more highlight of the second festival week: The grand gala evening of contemporary ballet Manuel Legris & Guests, held by Vienna's State Ballet director Manuel Legris at Burgtheater from July 24 to July 27. The Etoile-Dancer of the Ballet de l´Opéra National de Paris Aurélie Dupont opens this ImPulsTanz-Gala with Jiří Kylián's Il faut quune porte, dancing this duetto with her former colleague Manuel Legris. John Neumeier, the long-standing director of the Hamburg Ballet, presents a duet from his first feature-length new classic, Third Symphony by Gustav Mahler from 1975 – the first piece of his great Mahler cycle – featuring Silvia Azzoni and Alexandre Riabko. Tamako Akiyama and Dimo Kirilov Milev will dance in the choreography Arcangelo by Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato. Discovered by Kylián for the NDT in the 1980s, he is now the director of the Michailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The piece is conceived as a meditation about Heaven and Hell. The „étoiles“ Aurélie Dupont and Manuel Legris will also dance the final piece of the gala evening, a duet from Le Parc by renowned choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. In 1995, the Frenchman was awarded the Prix Benois de la Danse for this work, which he had choreographed for the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris. Le Parc is a dance about the art of love with a reference to 17th and 18th-century French literature. For more details, please check www.impulstanz.com Source: ImPulsTanz
