London Coliseum to Host Tribute to Anna Pavlova
Abroad
Pavlova’s legendary qualities will be explored further through rare video fragments played during the Gala, and in a photo exhibition held at the Coliseum on the day of the show. The contribution that the great ballerina made to ballet around the world is inestimable and especially in England. Ashton and Helpmann were inspired by her and Ninette de Valois once said that she wished she had joined her company. A number of her company’s former dancers became teachers at the Royal Ballet School and elsewhere in England. For much of her life Anna Pavlova toured the world with her own company but kept a home in London, at Ivy House. The unique series of Russian Ballet Icons galas have been organised by Ensemble Productions annually for the last seven years. Every gala is built around a legendary name from the Russian ballet world to be a multimedia experience, combining performances by the best living masters of ballet with the history of the genre through one of the great icons of the Russian ballet stage. Previous galas have given tribute to Maya Plisetskaya (2006), Yury Grigorovich (2007), Maris Liepa (2008), Sergei Diaghilev (2009), Rudolf Nureyev (2010) and Galina Ulanova (2011). This year the Russian Ballet icons Gala celebrates the life and career of the great Anna Pavlova and is organised in association with Anna Pavlova House and will launch the Anna Pavlova Festival.
