Winners of The Dance Open Award Announced

As the Dance Open festival, held annually in Saint Petersburgh concluded on April 16 with the final Dance Open Gala of ballet stars, winners of The Dance Open Award have been revealed too. The Award is intended to celebrate the highest personal achievements of ballet soloists each year – the connection of virtuoso technique and artistry, regardless of styles, genres and trends of performances. Organizing Committee of the St. Petersburg International Ballet Award DANCE OPEN annually suggests nominees who participate in the DANCE OPEN Gala of ballet stars as well. The international jury secretly decides which Awards ballet dancers and ballerinas would get or decides that no one would get one or more Awards. One and the same participant could not get more than one Award at one year. In the Jury there are the artistic directors of the major ballet companies and well-known choreographers, such as John Neumeier, Ivan Liška or Boris Eifman, who all took part in 2010. This year the jury with their chairperson Natalia Makarova awarded following artists in six different cathegories: Dance Open Award - Iana Salenko (Staatsoper Berlin) Best Duet - Otto Bubeníček (Hamburg Ballet), Jiří Bubeníček (Dresden SemperOper) Mr Virtuosity - Yonah Acosta (English National Ballet) Ms Virtuosity - Evgenia Obraztcova (Bolshoi Theatre) Mr Expressivity - Dinu Tamazlakaru (Staatsoper Berlin) Ms Expressivity - Maria Eichwald (Stuttgart Ballet) In addition to those, Daniel Ulbricht of the New York City Ballet won the People’s Choice Award, given on the basis of votes submitted directly by festival audiences. All the winners were awarded a crystal replica of a copy of the bronze cast of the foot of the great ballerina Anna Pavlova, which was created in 1913 by the sculptor B.O. Fredman-Klyuzel. The prototype of the Award is kept at the St. Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music. Source: www.danceopen.com
