New Stage at the piazzeta of the National Theatre in Prague
Performance of physical theatre by japanese choreographer Shusaku Takeuchi. Inspired by the daily life of the office workers; the endless hours behind the desk, the stacks of papers and documents, the dreams and fantasies being out of control.
VIDEO Package - CLIP - short FILM
In Package, Takeuchi creates compelling dance theater with a surrealistic characters, which lead the audience into astonishment and delight.
A timeless site-specific project linking related art fields into one. Dancers, actors, musicians, and a tap-dancer perform under the open sky for people maybe just on there way home from work. Package is about the everyday office routine. About people who spend their lives in an office environment, their functions directed by a system: hierarchy at the expense of feeling, mood, personal initiative, and emotion. But these people (and us) have been ‘programmed’ with much more powerful laws – the instincts to survive and reproduce, the need to lead, the urge to rebel, and the constant effort to win the attention of the opposite sex. Package is a dream about just one moment, when in the face of every such law and limiting prejudice we are able to reach in a way other than that dictated by the rules. All this is set in an office environment, as a symbol of routine, unfulfilled dreams, as we know from the writings of Franz Kafka. What happens when one link in the chain of the office stereotype breaks free as far as human fantasy can go? And who’ll join in?
Package is a physical theatre performance, an example of applying the genius loci of a given environment. Package was created by Shusaku Takeuchi for his group Bodytorium in the Netherlands in 1993. This work has performed in many places around the world, always adapted to the setting of the given location. Among other things, it was the first official production from Western Europe performed on Red Square in Moscow. Source: 420PEOPLE, photo by Pavel Hejný
