African Dance at the Duncan Centre

As a part of the festival Melting Pot 2011 there will be two evenings of traditional and contemporary African dance on November 10 and 11, 2011 at the Duncan Centre Theatre in Prague-Braník. Among others, the audiences will get to see performances by artists such as Ciré Béye, a Senegalese dancer and choreographer and an artistic assistant to Germaine Acogny, the icon of contemporary African dance. Kaolack (Senegal) and Maurice Yeka, dancer, choreographer and visual artist from the Democratic Republic of Congo will present their work there too. The performances of all three choreographers take place on November 10 and 11, 2011 at the Duncan Centre Theatre, starting at 8 p.m. As another part of the festival there will be also an African market in the courtyard of the Duncan Centre Conservatory, opening one hour before each performance. Visitors to the market will have an opportunity to taste African culinary specialties, including African fair-trade coffee and buy African products of all kinds (textile, puppets, African board games etc.). A dance workshop for the public with the abovementioned artists takes place on November 12 and 13, 2011 at the Duncan Centre Conservatory. His long-standing work in the field of African dance has brought about invitations to the world's leading theatres, and his artistic journey is characterized by a successful combination of the careers of a dancer, choreographer, instructor and a founder of his own dance association. His work is based in the traditional African dance and he presents modern African dance in his own peculiar way too. He presents his acquired experience in both dance and choreography in many countries. His latest work has influenced several dozens of dance companies around in the world. He currently lives in the Czech Republic. In his works he depicts the painful history of his country, its people living their everyday lives and emotions resulting from his separation from home.
