Czech Contemporary Dance Only in Good Light in Photos by Vojtěch Brtnický

On Friday 29th June there was an opening of an exhibition of photographs by Vojtěch Brtnický depicting contemporary Czech dance scene at the Culture Centre Mlejn. The exhibition ONLY GOOD LIGHT was organized by Arts and Theatre Institute in cooperation with the Culture Centre Mlejn to promote Czech dance both home and abroad. Twenty photographs by Brtnický feature moments from performances and rehearsals of leading Czech contemporary dance companies such as NANOHACH , 420People or VerTeDance , as well as freelance choreographers such as Lenka Bartůňková, Jan Komárek, Kateřina Stupecká, Jiří Bartovanec and many others. "Vojtěch Brtnický has been focusing on dance with the lens of his camera for many years. Quietly and sensitively. His photographs capture the reality far off our viewers’ experience and from our point of view he thus becomes an artist of an unseen world," says Jana Návratová, the curator of the exhibition and adds: "Apart from stylized photographic reports about dance Brtnický’s photo collection also captures the various forms of work of those Czech companies – there are photos from rehearsals, dance “sorties” in the streets, but there are also purely emblematic pictures full of energy and physical strength." Apart from choreographies by Czech artists that lack any substantial coverage in photography Brtnický also took photos of foreign ensembles that performed in Prague as guests, which creates another, international dimension to his collection. For Czech contemporary dance his work represents an invaluable testimony and a mirror the spectator will always like to look into. The exhibition at Culture Centre Mlejn (Kovářova 1615/4, Prague 5 - Stodůlky) takes place till August 15, 2012. After that the exhibition becomes part of the Arts and Theatre Institute collections and will be presented at other venues both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
