Israel Galván to Be Star Guest Artist of Dance Prague Festival 2016

The Dance Prague festival, taking place from 23 May to 23 June 2016, presents the main star guest of its 28th edition. It will be Israel Galván, pioneer of the “flamenco contemporary” style, who will visit Prague for the very first time. The festival will culminate in his two performances on 22 and 23 June 2016 in Musical Theatre Karlín.
Contemporary dance provides an inexhaustible number of forms, ways of expression, meanings and cross-genres. It is not only its own palette of innovative forms of expression which makes contemporary dance so attractive but also its ability to integrate the features of various traditional cultures, to reflect their influence and roots and transform them into some new, topical issues.  One of the greatest challenges for contemporary dance art has been for many years the relatively fixed and world-famous dance and music style of flamenco,” says the founder and director of the festival, Yvona Kreuzmannová, and explains why the festival organisers decided for an artist oscillating between two dance styles. “Flamenco has undergone many transformations and got new meanings since the 1970’s. Paco de Lucia, Antonio Gades and also the film maker Carlos Saur enlarged the world fan base of this unique style. Other artists started to deal with the dialogue between flamenco and different genres, especially in music. But in this millennium, it has been the spontaneous, original and energetic experimenter Israel Galván who plunged deep into the expression possibilities of flamenco-formed body,” adds Yvona Kreuzmannová.
“Though still dancing in an Andalusian flamenco group in the 1990‘s, in 2000 he already founded his own company with which he danced flamenco variations inspired by Kafka’s Metamorphoses, clearly anticipating the risky path he decided to take. After The Flamenco Biennale in Sevilla in 2008, the icon of Israel Galván was born. He has been awarded many times for his work, including the Bessie Award and recently he has surprised by his collaboration with Akram Khan,” conclude the organisers.
