Men& Mahler / Palle Granhøj / festival Malá inventura 2013

This year‘s festival Mala Inventura will present an international production Men&Mahler. This unique project is carried out under the patronage of the DNA - Development of New Art project, and lead by Palle Granhoj, an international celebrity in the field of dance. Two festival shows of Men&Mahler will be presented at PONEC Theatre on Wednesday 27. 2 at 8 pm and on Thursday 28. 2. at 6 pm. Further shows will be held on 1. 3. in Brno (National Theatre Brno – Reduta), 2. 3. in Bratislava (A4) and 4. 3. in Jihlava (DIOD).
What do you get when you put a female singer and eight male dancers from various countries together for eight weeks, and everyday deconstruct the work they create? “We are very happy to have achieved an almost unanimous choice of Palle Granhøj, this exceptional choreographer, and that he has consented to work with us. Meeting with such a choreographic mastermind as Granhøj is a great opportunity for all of us, especially the dancers involved in the project,” comments the chief coordinator of the project DNA Continuum Adriana Světlikova.
The first phase of creating Men&Mahler consisted of three audition workshops (Vilnius, LT; Budapest, HU; Prague, CZ) at which the Danish director and choreographer Palle Granhoj chose 6 dancers from around Europe. The production itself was then created in the Danish town of Aarhus, at the dance and visual theatre Bora Bora, a partner institution of Nova siť. The piece was premiered on June 8, 2012 at Bunker theatre in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
In Men&Mahler Palle Granhoj focuses on the raw power of masculinity. Mahler‘s sorrowful and poetic music becomes a counterpoint to the male bonding and masculine playfulness, when eight virile and powerful bodies, strapped out in rubber ropes, performing masculine archetypal rituals. Meanwhile the singer with a Attenboroughish soberness observes their game.

Granhoj Dans is an internationally acknowledged dance company based in the city of Aarhus, Denmark. The productions of Granhoj Dans are created by the company‘s artistic director and choreographer Palle Granhoj, in close co-operation with the dancers, and visual designer Per Victor. If one has to compare the various productions of Granhoj Dans through the years, their greatest resemblance is indeed the fact that none of them are like the others. There is no recognizable aesthetic line, nor is there a type of movement or a way to approach a theme to be found. The performances are all the outcome of studying the interaction between the chosen motif and the artists participating in the creative process. This defines the form of expression, and so the language will be unique every time. The main tool is always the Obstruction Technique, a singular artistic idiom that has given Palle Granhoj and his work a noticeable position in the international dance arena.

DNA Continuum is a project of eight European cultural NGOs. The project is organized by the civic association Nova siť (the Czech Republic) and its partners are: Chorea Theatre Association (Poland), Bora Bora (Denmark), A4 (Slovakia), L1 Association (Hungary), Fish Eye artistic association (Latvia), SchlossBrollin (Germany). DNA Continuum 2011–2013 develops a previous project called DNA 2009–2010. The project has twice received support from the European Union programme Culture.
