Neoclassical Premiere in Pilsen: Anna Karenina

On November 17th, a brand new production of the Pilsen ballet ensemble took place in the Grat Theatre: Anna Karenina, with libretto and choreography by Libor Vaculík and music by Dimitrij Shostakovich. The famous novel by Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, inspired by true events, tells the story of the strength of passion able to break down the barriers of convention in society. Anna Karenina, a woman full of desire and feelings, stunning in her exceptional beauty and elegance, is unable to keep her burning affair with the young officer, Alexej Vronský, secret. She leaves her husband; meaning that she loses not only her standing in society, but also – and this is the most painful for her – also the possibility to see her young son. It is only a matter of time before her self-destructive love becomes a burden for the man she loves…
The immortality of this story is confirmed by a whole host of film, theatre, and even ballet adaptations in which the character of this tragic heroine has been portrayed by many big names. In Pilsen’s production we see Zuzana Pokorna and Michaela Musilová in the title role.
