Grant applications deadline postponed? Suspicious gesture of the minister…

Out of the blue, the Ministry of Culture postponed the deadline for 2019 grant applications to 12 November 2018 earlier this month. Good news? Rather a bunch of question marks…

All those who invested their physical and mental efforts in submitting their grant applications more than a month ago and those who queued at the registry on the very last day of accepting applications, are now wondering: Why? How come? What’s behind that? Who can benefit from that? Did anyone forget to submit their application on time? Will artists create more new projects within a week and apply for funding? Will the number of applications received increase after the deadline extension? Are there fewer applications than the new Minister expected, considering, for instance, the surprisingly increased budget?... Oh, you wish!

I must admit that rather than an open and friendly gesture of the Minister of Culture, I smell some behind-the-scenes political machinations or shady lobbyism. If the extension had been announced in September, before the actual deadline, I believe many applicants would have appreciated it. They would have had a month and a half to finalize their visions and ideas to be realized next year with the financial support from the state. So much the more that the time gap between the submission of applications and grant committees’ session is relatively long. But such a non-conceptual postponement of the deadline really stinks…
