Contemporary dance as "Expensive darlings"

“In these days, the theme of contemporary dance can be anything. Surprisingly, its theme can also be contemporary dance as such and its position in contemporary society which was the case of the performance by Maja Delak, Slovenian choreographer, called „Expensive Darlings“ (Drage drage in original). This work could be seen in La Fabrika as a part of 4+4 days in motion festival´s programme.
How can we express the position of contemporary dance most concisely? Maja Dejak chose an analogy with a woman, or with her submissive position in the society, using wide range of seemingly or intentionally incoherent scenes and situations during which she made the best of not only her powers, but also the powers of other five dancers. They had a chance to showcase their dance and acting skills“ …“The status of the oppressed sex is alternated with the desire to be a man, in the form of brave toreador or captivating singer – heartbreaker. Always with humour and hyperbole, with a touch of cruelty, lust, animosity and captivity.“
