The project aims to remind the public that culture is not a marginal aspect of public life, but one of the fundamental pillars of society. This long-term artistic performance, featuring dozens of artists across various disciplines, follows the student demonstration We Stand for Culture, which took place on Wednesday, March 11, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Malostranské Square.
Art Endures – An Event Highlighting the Underfunding of Czech Culture
Starting Friday, March 13, the public space around the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic on Maltézské náměstí will become the venue for the event Art Endures (Umění trvá), which draws attention to the long-standing underfunding of culture in the Czech Republic and to growing concerns about political interference in artistic freedom.
The initiative was also spurred by recent events in Europe, which demonstrate how easily cultural institutions can come under political pressure. The organizers point, for example, to the situation in Slovakia, where disputes have recently arisen over the direction of cultural institutions and their independence. The Art Endures project aims to highlight that freedom of artistic expression cannot be taken for granted and must be protected over the long term.
The concept behind the Art Endures event is simple: every weekday, an artist will present a short performance in a public space. The form is entirely open—it could be a movement or musical performance, a reading, or a visual art event. Artists will thus gradually present their work in public spaces, symbolically emphasizing that culture is a living and enduring part of society.
The Art Endures project is conceived as a peaceful and persistent reminder of the importance of culture in society and can last for months or even years. It is not a demonstration, but a form of public busking. The participants’ reward will not be money, but the opportunity to brighten up passersby’s workday while reminding them that art has an irreplaceable place in society.
The first performance will take place on Friday, March 13, at 4:00 p.m. in front of the Czech Ministry of Culture building on Maltézské náměstí in Prague. Each artistic intervention will be documented and gradually published on Facebook. The project is expected to conclude in the future with an exhibition charting the course of this long-term event.
The event is organized by artists associated with the Art Endures (Umění trvá) initiative.
