“Ballet in Cinema” Airs Bolshoi Ballet’s Corsair from Moscow

On Sunday, March 11 this year's first broadcast from Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet – romantic ballet Le Corsaire – is aired in 12 Czech and Moravian cinemas. Inspired by Lord Byron’s poem, the piece is abundant with exotic and distant places, full of pirates, eunuchs and charming female slaves, there is even a ship at sea, too. The leading roles are performed by Svetlana Lunkina and Ruslan Skvorcov. Moscow production of Le Corsaire (2007) is the result of scientific, even detective work of many years on the reconstruction of the original, 1899 ballet version by Marius Petipa. Yuri Burlaka, a specialist in the reconstruction of ballets, who thoroughly studied manuscripts in Harvard theatre library completed the work with Alexei Ratmansky. Regular audiences at the “Ballet in Cinema” broadcasts may be already familiar with Lunkina, who performed as Giselle last year; Ruslan Skvorcov, who appears as the manly commander of pirates takes part in the live broadcasts for the first time. Bolshoi Ballet is undoubtedly one of the most respected ballet companies in the world. Their tradition goes back as far as the tsarist period in Russia (1776), in the 20th century they further refined their typical, almost athletic style and have maintained their reputation to this day. The well-known names in the company include Svetlana Zakharova, David Hallberg and Mikhail Lobukhin. The Bolshoi Ballet have chosen for the current season of live broadcasts traditional, classical highlights of their repertoire. Another piece, aired as a part of the “Ballet in Cinema” broadcasts is Romeo and Juliet, the neo-classical narrative ballet by Kenneth MacMillan, performed by the Royal Ballet on March 22nd.   Le Corsaire Music: A.
