"Ballet in Cinema" Introduces the Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Cinderella

In January and February the cinema audiences can look forward to Cinderella, performed by Birmingham Royal Ballet as the part of the "Ballet in Cinema" project. The recording of this traditional fairy tale presents a successful piece staged by a contemporary British ballet choreographer David Bintley. A characteristic feature of this production are costumes and stage design by John Macfarlane, known for his long-term collaboration with Jiří Kylián. The role of Cinderella, dreaming about happiness is dancedby Elisha Willis, Iain Mackay performs as Prince. The ballet Cinderella was created in 2010 by a longtime artistic director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet and one of the greatest British choreographersDavid Bintleyas a part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the ensemble. David Bintley's work is fundamentally influenced by Sir Frederick Ashton, he is thus considered a follower of the English style of choreography. The melodic music for the ballet by Sergei Prokofiev (1945) creates the background for the traditional fairy tale of Cinderella, who despite experiencing nothing but injustice from her stepmother and sisters retains a pure soul, and her dream of love and happiness comes to a happy ending thanks to a glass slipper and help from a magical fairy. The Birmingham ensemble has historically evolved from the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet and has been the second company of the original Royal Ballet in London. In 1990 the ballet troupe moved to Birmingham under their new name. Sir Peter Wright had been their famous artistic director of many years, since 1995 the position has been taken up by David Bintley. David Bintley (born 1957) is one of the most successful British choreographers today. He studied at the Royal Ballet School to become – as a member of the Royal Ballet in London –one of the best character dancers of his time. Since his youth he has displayed a remarkable gift for choreography with a strong influence from Frederick Ashton (they even have their birthdays on the same day) and is regarded as one the followers of the English style in the contemporary generation. He has created a lot of successful ballets (Swan of Tuonela, Tombeaux, Soldier's Tale, The Snow Queen, Still Life at the Penguin Cafe, Edward II). For several years he was the resident choreographer of the Royal Ballet in London, since 1995 he has been the artistic director of Birmingham Royal Ballet, leading it from one success to another.
