Ballet in Cinema to Air Nederlands Dans Theater for the First Time

On Thursday, May 31st the first ever live broadcast of NDT - Nederlands Dans Theatre, one of the most inspiring companies in the field of contemporary dance takes place as a part of the Ballet in cinema. Two cinemas in the Czech Republic – Bio Oko in Prague and Dům kultury in Ostrava – take part in the event. A mixed bill called Move to Move features choreographies by authors such as Ohad Naharin and Paul Lightfoot and music by Phillip Glass. The first part of the four-piece bill is a choreography Left Right Left Right by young author Alexander Ekman. The work is a study of human movement, concentration and rhythm. Secus is a piece by "choreographic guru" Ohad Naharin, artistic director of the Israeli Batsheva Dance Company. The programme also features two choreographies by the creative duo Paul Lightfoot and Sol Léon. First of them is a world premiere Shine a Light, which combines a dance form peculiar to these authors with a fascinating lighting design. Lightfoot quotes Francis Bacon as his inspiration: "In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present." The second choreography Silent Screen is based on the music by Phillip Glass. As the title suggests, the work is inspired by the distinctive expression of actors from the silent film era.
Nederlands Dans Theater is one of the most successful contemporary dance companies in the world. The Dutch ensemble based in The Hague is known for the successful era under the brilliant Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián. It was established in 1959, when a group of dancers from the Dutch National Ballet left their company to pursue a more experimental dance career. Over the past 50 years choreographers such as Hans van Manen, Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe, Nacho Duato, Mats Ek and many others have left their mark in the history of the company. Czech dancers and founding members of 420PEOPLE Václav Kuneš and Nataša Novotná were long-term members of NDT too.
