Dance Context Journal Invites Submissions on "Dance and Regeneration"

What role does regeneration play in the lives of dancers, in artistic practice, and in the functioning of cultural institutions? Dance Context Journal explores regeneration in its various forms and invites authors to submit proposals for articles for its 2027 issue. Abstracts can be submitted until 20 November 2026.

Dance Context Journal, a periodical published by the organisation Dance Context, z.ú., has announced an open call for contributions to its 2027 issue. The theme of the upcoming edition is Dance and Regeneration, offering space to reflect on renewal and care in dance: from the regeneration of the human body and changes in artistic practices to the renewal of dance companies and cultural institutions.

In dance, regeneration is closely linked to questions of health, working conditions, and the long-term sustainability of an artistic career. How do dancers care for their physical and mental health in the context of intense physical work? What role does rest play in injury prevention and recovery? How does the relationship with one’s body and profession change with age? And how can theatres, companies, schools, and other institutions create conditions for sustainable artistic practice?

The call also offers a broader perspective on regeneration as a process of renewal that does not necessarily mean replacing the old with the new. This includes the transmission of experience and artistic traditions between generations, changes within dance companies and institutions, the revival of historical repertoire, and the relationship between dance and the environment. Attention may also be given to how contemporary artistic practices build on earlier techniques and experiences, and how sources of inspiration are repeatedly renewed in dance.

Three Publication Options

Submissions can be made to one of the Journal’s three sections. The first thematic section is intended for popular-science and educational articles and essays by authors working in criticism, theory, and artistic practice. These articles range in length from 9,000 to 18,000 characters.

The second thematic section publishes peer-reviewed studies related to the annual theme. These texts range in length from 18,000 to 36,000 characters, undergo a double-blind peer-review process, and must meet academic standards in terms of theoretical framework, methodology, and referencing.

The Journal also offers an open section for peer-reviewed studies that do not need to relate to the theme of regeneration. These contributions must also meet academic publishing standards and range in length from 18,000 to 36,000 characters.

The deadline for submitting abstracts (150–300 words) is 20 November 2026. Further information about the call and the individual publication sections is available on the Dance Context website.
