Famous Belgian Choreographer Ann Van den Broek First Time for 420PEOPLE

For the first time ever, renown ensemble 420PEOPLE are about to present a production made-to-measure for the company by a foreign choreographer. Ann Van den Broek, the reputed innovator, among other things the awardee of the Dutch dance prize Zwaan she gained with Co(te)lette will come to Prague and work intensely with the company to present original movement material arising from her method which could easily be labeled as „to the core" of mind and movement. The result of her encounter with 420PEOPLE will be presented 14th and 15th December in Archa Theatre.Phrasing the Pain is a new group piece for seven dancers (Sylva Nečasová, Nataša Novotná, Ombline Noyer, Václav Kuneš, Milan Odstrčil, Štěpán Pechar and Alexandr Volný) based on an original movement phrase, the pain phrase, used in the production I SOLO MENT (Ann Van den Broek, 2008). This movement phrase originally sprung forth from the feelings of pain and sadness one feels after losing a loved one, a friend, a parent, a child, etc. All the movements came out of these feelings, not one movement was gratuitous. This pain phrase is the basis of a constantly repetitive and rhythmic choreography in which the dancers, using that same material, must ‘travel’ through various feelings such as lust, aggression, euphoria, zero-point, to transform this grief into other truths.
"I always demand more from the dancers than what they were used to. Together we go beyond their physical and psychological boundaries. I believe the veracity of movement is directly dependent on the truthfulness of determination that precedes movement. I want dancers to perform every movement only because at that moment there was no other way out," Ann Van den Broek explains the basic principles of her work.
Even before the premiere, 420PEOPLE will perform for the first time in the emerging space for new art Jatka78 in Holešovice, where they bring a special program with a selection of the best of the current repertoire. The company presented the duet La Vie and site-specific intervention in the new theater space within a special and free-access opening happening in Jatka78 that took place on November 5th. On the program there are also reprises of productions Inferno - Dante variations, inspired by Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, 24th Nov and 4th Dec in NoD in city center’s Dlouhá street.
