Flies Lake – Spanish Contemporary Dance at the New Stage

For the very first time the Czech Republic hosts the legend legend of Catalan dance, the choreographer Sol Picó and her copany on Monday, September 19th at the New Stage of the National Thatre. Flies Lake is a piece inspired by atmosphere and aesthetics of a wild rock concert. Picó herself performs the role of a frontman with a band behind her back, the only difference being that she expresses herself in wild dancing and not singing. In Flies Lake Sol presents her characteristic incorrect black humour as well as her capacity for multiple ways of reading reality. Sol is also a master of combining diverse music and ance styles and genres. You will see the queen of Spanish contemporary movement theatre dance rock’n’roll, blues or the passionate dance of flamenco on red high heels. The audience is involved in the show as Sol keeps asking them provocative questions.
Sol wanted to make a show that is specific, austere and impressive, removing the scenery and simplifying the stage in order to highlight the contents, the acting, to go to the heart of the  show. From  stomach  to  stomach.  Another exercise in sincerity and entertainment.
It is under these premises that Sol Picó proposes a previously impossible challenge, a rock-and-roll concert where the singer is not a singer but a ballerina. Sol will be a typical master of ceremonies and follow all the rituals of a typical rock-and-roll concert: the introduction of the singers, the solos, choreographies with the backing singers etc. A show that is fruit of a catharsis, the search for evolution through change. Sol Picó searched for radical references in our recent history which show rebellion and we settled for the phenomenon that is rock and roll, a true collective catharsis and which is to be the instrument that Sol uses to pose questions and make propositions on stage.
A rock concert is the perfect space to work on a theme that Sol has been studying for years, the relationship of the audience and the artist and vice versa, the communication of a live happening. In Sol’s words: We play ourselves in order to stimulate change through catharsis with the public. Through this work, Sol Picó wants to offer the audience a look in multiple layers and with different depths, depending on how far the public wants to see, the effort they want to take and how much they identify with what we offer them. A rock-and-roll concert with generous performers, who give the best of themselves. An exercise in sincerity and communication.
