Bubeníček has not previously been publicly involved in politics. In the arts community, he is known primarily for his long-standing work with international ballet companies and as a choreographer. According to SPD Chairman Tomio Okamura, he is a “top expert” in the field of culture. The new deputy minister will be primarily responsible for the area of performing arts. He thus joins the team of Minister of Culture Ota Klempíř (for Motorists), which already includes Kateřina Pešatová, nominated by the ANO party, and Adam Gody Kocián for Motorists.
In an interview with iROZHLAS.cz, Bubeníček stated that he is not joining the ministry for political reasons, but primarily for the sake of Czech art and culture. Upon his return from abroad, he first intends to familiarize himself in detail with the ministry’s operations and the specific areas under his purview.
Jiří Bubeníček is one of the most prominent figures on the Czech ballet scene in recent decades. He graduated from the Dance Conservatory in Prague, subsequently performed with the Hamburg Ballet, and later served as principal dancer with the Semperoper Ballett in Dresden. In addition to his dancing career, he has also made a name for himself as a choreographer, with his works performed on prestigious European and international stages. He has received numerous awards for his artistic achievements, including the prestigious Benois de la Danse prize. He is also the twin brother of dancer and set designer Otto Bubeníček.
