National Theatre Brno prepares 18 premieres for 2021/2022 season

The National Theatre Brno ensembles have prepared 18 premieres for the 2021/2022 season. Some of the titles have already been staged and later rescheduled during the past two seasons affected by the pandemic.

Another novelty is an upgraded subscription system which allows theatre customers to select their preferred genres and decide whether they want to come to the theatre on week days or weekends. Subscriptions will be on sale beginning 3 May. The theatre can reopen as soon as anti-pandemic restrictions are lifted, and artists will perform even for 20% of live audiences, says the director of the National Theatre Brno Martin Glaser.

The fact that the theatre is making plans for re-opening is a sign of hope and belief that artists will soon perform in a usual way. “What is ahead of us can’t be as long as what we have been experiencing for the past twelve months. When the theatre is closed, we lose 7 million CZK in ticket sales every month, so the number of premieres had to be reduced. But our audiences won’t notice anything as we plan to present titles staged in this season and also The Greek Passion which was originally planned for Easter 2021,” said Glaser.

The premiere of Stabat Mater (a tribute to Pavel Šmok), will take place on 3 September 2021 in the Mahen Theatre. The ballet company will also return to the production of Beethoven which was staged in cooperation with the choir, soloists and orchestra of the Janáček Opera on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. According to Mário Radačovský, the artistic director of the Brno ballet, Beethoven is one of the biggest projects in the past few years. “We’ve been through the hardest ever season together, or I should rather say pieces of a season. Dance artists have very short careers and every season (or even months) they miss takes a toll on them, as well as on other people who have this beautiful genre as their profession,” explained Radačovský. The company will also put on Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella and is preparing projects such as the Dance Brno festival (which will unite ballet companies from Prague, Ostrava, Olomouc, Pilsen and České Budějovice), the International Dance Day celebrations and Open Air productions in the Bishop Yard.
