SKUTR and Laterna magika: Human Locomotion Premieres on the New Stage

On Thursday 6th February, the New Stage will present a world premiere of the latest multimedia project of Laterna magika that deals with life and works of famous British photographer and inventor Eadweard Muybridge, whose work had crucial impact on development of (not only) photography.Human Locomotion, new production which deals with visual art as well as dance, was created under the leadership of directors Martin Kukučka and Lukáš Trpišovský (SKUTR) with choreography of Jan Kodet, scenography of Jakub Kopecký and music by Petr Kaláb. Contemporary dance, physical theatre and impressive visual art mix together in a project that is a tribute to man whose work has had a great impact on the form of visual media until today. Laterna magika has a lot in common with Eadweard Muybridge’s work – movement, photography, film; those are interference points that connect us with the versatile photographer who invented modern shutter or zoopraxiscope and thus prefigured the era of film. This theatrical piece draws its inspiration not just from Muybridge’s famous series of photographic studies of human and animal motion but also his life. Eadweard Muybridge(1830–1904, his real name Edward James Muggeridge) is a true source of inspiration and a curious object for multimedia theatre artists: his inventions upgraded the possibilities of capturing motion and were crucial for further development of photography, film and all visual media. He gained reputation with his phase-studies of human and animal motion, the invention of zoopraxiscope and cinematoscope, the forerunners of the future film technology. His new type of shutter was revolutionary in shortening the exposure time. Muybridge’s work also is a historical testimony of his time, a testimony with strong artistic dimension. Source: New Stage
