The Institute of Arts - Theatre Institute Celebrates 20 Years of Kylian Video Library

The 20th anniversary of Kylian Video Library at The Institute of Arts - Theatre Institute (IDU) is going to a grand finale called Different Shores on November 30, 2011. The atmosphere of the evening is naturally going to revolve around Kylián's trademark choreographic style, apart from dance performances the audiences will also get to see a unique video footage from the archive. The evening will feature about a dozen dancers, who spent a substantial part of their careers in the prestigious Nederlands Dans Theater, an indelible character of which was created by the Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián. The artistic guideline will be provided by the company 420PEOPLE, whose founders Václav Kuneš and Nataša Novotná spent both together 18 years „by Kylián“. This special evening takes place at the New Stage of the National Theatre, which is another partner of the show. Memoirs Different Shores - Choreographer Jiří Kylián between The Hague and Prague, published by IDU to commemorate the anniversary will be launched there too. "There is hardly any more proper way to celebrate 20 years of Kylian Video Library than with dance," says Eva Žáková of the Institute of Arts - Theatre Institute. "We would like to present not only the personality and the oeuvre of Jiří Kylián, but also his international fame and relationship to the Czech Republic."
There is no doubt that Jiří Kylián has influenced several generations of dancers and contemporary choreographers. Therefore, in the course of the evening several demonstrations of his choreographic workshop (Anonymous, 27'52'', Bella Figura) as well as those by his friends and long-term colleagues, such as Cora Bos-Kroese (Amoroso), Václav Kuneš (Neonate) or Lukáš Timulák (Urtanz) will be performed. "What is really interesting about Jiří Kylián is his creative explosion, his understanding of choreography as a spiritual principle and his ability to stay on top of things that is reflected in the way he works with the human body and the personality of a dancer," says Václav Kuneš, the artistic director of 420PEOPLE, the company that organizes the celebration jointly with IDU .
As a part of the celebration also some other events, such as seminars, workshops and discussions will také place. Really striking and extraordinary is an installation of an interactive hologram Phospene Variations, Jason Akira Somma, one of the most talented New York artists and Kylián
's collaborator will start a prevue on October 26 at the New Stage of the National Theatre with. In cooperation with the Institute of Lighting Design a lecture and a lab with Michael Simon, a leading lighting designer, set designer and director, who became famous not only for his long-term cooperation with Jiří Kylian, but also with William Forsythe, Heiner Goebbels and Christof Nele will be given.
Through another workshop, professional dancers and students of danse alike will also have an extraordinary opportunity to get to know not only Jiří Kylián
's repertoire, but also his unique approach to work. In the first part of the workshop led by Nataša Novotná and Václav Kuneš of 420PEOPLE the dancers are supposed to rehearse excerpts of choreographies "in a normal way" to have the opportunity to experience the transformation of the particular dance piece given according to everyone'abilities and skills in the second part, led by Cora Bos-Kroese and / or Jiří Kylián.

Kylian Foundation was established in 1988 in The Hague in order to promote new dance activities. The Foundation also manages documents, video collection and the copyrights of Jiří Kylián. The video collection of Kylian Foundation became the basis of a video library of dance pieces of The Institute of Arts - Theatre Institute in Prague (founded 1991) as well as records, documentary films and movies in the genre of dance for camera. At present, the Czech Kylian Video Library ranks among the largest video collections of dance in Europe and is the only one in the world that contains the complete recordings of Kylián's repertoire.
Celebrations are held under the auspices of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Prague and the Czech Ministry of Culture.
