The 2015/2016 season of the National Theatre in Prague will bring three ballet premieres. The first one is Louskáček a Myšák Plyšák (The Nutcracker and the Cuddly Mouse) choreographed by Petr Zuska, the second one Sněhová královna (The Snow Queen) by Michael Cordera. The season will close with a mixed bill entitled Vertigo, consisting of three pieces by Radu Poklitaru, Mauro Bigontetti and Alexander Ekman.
The first piece premiered by the Czech National Ballet in the 2015/2016 season will be the ballet The Nutcracker and the Cuddly Mouse. After ten years of reviving the version made by the director and choreographer Youri Vàmos, the company comes up with a brand-new production created by Petr Zuska, choreographer and Artistic Director of the National Theatre ballet ensemble. The Christmas fairy-tale, based on E. T. A. Hoffmann’s narrative, will be retold in a completely new spirit. “A story abounding in poetics, humour, images and magic will unfurl to the sounds of Tchaikovsky’s celebrated and sublime music. The magic of winter, Advent and Christmas, the mystery of Prague, Czech and Central European Yuletide traditions, and, naturally, unlimited freedom, imagination of the child’s soul and dreams,” explain the representatives of the Czech National Ballet. The premieres will take place on 3 and 4 December 2015 at the National Theatre, Prague.
The premiere of the second production is scheduled for 3 and 4 March 2016, on the State Opera stage. It is a ballet adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s Snow Queen. This piece was made in 2007 for the English National Ballet by the choreographer Michael Corder. The story of the girl Gerda and the boy Kay, who is imprisoned in the castle of the cruel Snow Queen, is a parable of the strength of friendship, love that can break ice and of malicious magic. Besides the challenging choreographic passages and fairy tale-like scenography, the audience may look forward to the beautiful music score by Sergei Prokofiev.
The third premiere will be held on 9 and 10 June 2016 at the New Stage. The mixed bill named Vertigo represents the essence of works of three contemporary European dance theatre creators – Rada Poklitaru from Moldavia, Mauro Bigonzetti from Italy and Alexander Ekman from Sweden. “Unlike the so called triptychs that were presented in the last seasons, this one will not have any particular dramaturgical line or unifying theme. On the contrary. The three sharply contrasting poetics of these artists and their opuses create a magical combination of lyricism, nostalgia, humour and foolish absurdity….. Caution! Such a combination may cause dizziness – and that is Vertigo,” conclude the representatives of Czech National Ballet.
