Following last year’s inaugural issue on the theme of dance in public space, the second edition of Dance Context Journal has now been released. Under the editorial of Petra Zeller Dotlačilová and Zuzana Rafajová, this new issue explores how dance contributes to the shaping and reflection of identity, not only in general, but also on a personal level.

“The question of identity and its free expression is among the most widely discussed topics in Euro-American society today. Art engages in a vivid dialogue with it, offering diverse perspectives. In dance, this is reflected, for example, in the challenging of bodily and gender norms, the search for safe spaces for self-expression, and the redefinition of one’s own identity,” comments editor Petra Zeller Dotlačilová.

The second issue of Dance Context Journal offers a diverse selection of both popular-science and research articles. The publication opens with an article by Markéta Fagan, who writes about dance as a pathway to experiencing flow and self-expression. Andrijana Trpković explores cultural differences and the fluidity of identity in the work of a Persian queer choreographer. Hana Strejčková focuses on gender dynamics in female pantomime. Lucie Štádlerová and Věra Sagulová reflect on how dance helps deaf children express their own identity. Michaela Kessler analyzes the use of artificial intelligence in dance and the related ethical and authorship dilemmas. Martyna Zbucka examines, through a questionnaire-based study, how body image among young dancers varies depending on the dance styles they practice. Laura Kolačkovská reflects on how long-term participation in folk dance within an urban environment shapes a researcher’s identity, intertwining personal experience with academic research. The issue concludes with the traditional overview of the previous season, summarising the most significant events on the Czech dance scene over the past year. Roman Vašek focuses on ballet, Lucie Kocourková on contemporary dance, and Hana Strejčková reflects on developments in new circus and nonverbal theatre.
