The identity of deaf people is often constructed by the hearing public and professional medical community on the basis of hearing loss, deafness, and disability. This view subordinates the Deaf community from majority society. But if we look at deaf identity through a cultural prism, we can view it in a more positive light.
Věra Sagulová
Věra Sagulová is a graduate of the Theatre and Education for the Deaf programme at the Theatre Faculty in Brno. She has been part of many successful theatre productions in the Czech Republic and across Europe. She works with the Slovenian theatre ensemble Tihe stopinje, for whom she writes plays. She also works for Weblíčko, an internet television provider for deaf children as part of ČMUN (The Czech-Moravian Union of the Deaf). She has designed and narrated several stories in sign language for deaf children. She is also part of the artistic collective Ostružina, where she performs alongside other deaf dancers and teaches dance courses for deaf children.
